Concerns of a potential failure by Invest NI to promote the “benefits” of the Northern Ireland Protocol have been raised by a consultant local authority.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) a consultee in the review process of Invest NI, has now agreed a motion to work collaboratively with the organisation to “put a focus” on promoting the regional economy.
The Department for the Economy, which carried out the review of the economic development agency identified “profound divisions” impacting Invest NI.
Downpatrick Sinn Fein councillor, Oonagh Hanlon putting forward the motion, said: “This council notes the recent publication of the Department for the Economy’s review of Invest NI.
“Welcomes that the need for profound change within the organisation has been recognised.
“Notes with concern that Invest NI has not pro-actively promoted the benefits and opportunities of the Protocol for business, which given our council’s geographic position represents missed opportunities. And calls on council to work collaboratively with Invest NI.”
The chamber heard a proposed amendment by DUP rep Callum Bowsie to remove the wording on the NI Protocol, however this failed to gain a seconder at the enterprise, regeneration and tourism committee.
Cll O’Hanlon added: “Invest NI is well resourced to develop our economy here, some larger companies are well catered for, but the vast majority of small businesses in the area have been neglected.
“A broader range of businesses should be supported and a partnership approach should be adopted for regional development.
“This is a time of huge opportunity for local businesses as the North now has a real competitive economic advantage.
“The recent deal between the EU and British government has unlocked unique and unparalleled access for our businesses to both the EU and British markets.
“We do need political stability and a functioning Executive if we are to grasp that major opportunity to create good quality jobs and grow our businesses and strengthen our economy.
“It would be unforgivable if the opportunities now available to us are squandered by the DUP, the boycott of the Executive and their refusal to work with the rest of us to create jobs and build our economy.”
