Thanks to Irish Language Events funding from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Iúr Cinn Fleadh is hosting an Exhibition, an intensive Irish course and a bilingual historical walk on Hill Street in Newry. The Fleadh runs from this Thursday 25 to Monday 29th August and there really is something for everyone.
Irish Language Intensive Course – Intermediate Level
A two-hour free Irish language course will take place in Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail (note this new venue) from 2-4pm on Saturday 27 Lúnasa/August. Refreshments provided. The course tutor will be Séamus Mac Dhaibhéid. Deis iontach atá ann an Ghaeilge a chleachtadh i ngrúpa beag agus i suíomh atá lán d’áiseanna foghlama. The course is pitched at those who have reached intermediate level and who wish to practise their language skills. There will be the usual mix of spoken Irish, vocabulary building, useful handouts and a verse or two. This is a good opportunity to return to language learning before the beginning of the Autumn term.

Protestants and The Gaelic Languages – An exhibition in Newry Library
The exhibition of texts (Gaeilge agus Gàidhlig) will showcase the contribution of Protestant scholars to the study and promotion of the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages. On display will be a small but precious number of signed editions by Protestant writers, and a larger number of novels, travelogues, autobiographies, books of verse, religious texts and primers for the teaching of Irish. The oldest Scottish Gaelic book on display will be Rev. William Shaw’s ‘An Analysis of the Galic Language’ (1778). A very rare copy of Shaw’s ‘Galic and English Dictionary’ (1780) will also feature in the exhibition. Also supported by the Brian Conlon Foundation.
Event runs during Newry Library opening hours.
Hidden Hill Street – Sráid Hill Faoi Cheilt – A Guided Walk
The planned guided walk along Hidden Hill Street promises to be a revelation. Participants will be taken on a whistlestop tour of Newry’s main thoroughfare in the historic heart of the town. There will be an emphasis on the quirkier, lesser-known aspects of our socio-commercial history and on our shared cultural and built heritage. Hill Street hosted patriots of national renown, academics, publishers, historians, photographers, memorable shopkeepers, and was the setting of famous hotels, eateries, reading rooms, cinemas, forges, pharmacies, newspapers & newsagents, churches and schools. Más duine de na Cahills, Boyds, Quinns, O’ Hagans nó Kellys thú or if your surname comes from Scotland - Greer, Henderson, Lockhart, Kinnear, Laing - nó má tá spéis agat i litearthacht nó i ngluaiseachtaí radacacha an Iúir, you will both enjoy and likely learn something from this walk.
Starting 4.30pm Satharn/Saturday 27 Lúnasa/August @ Town Hall/Halla an Bhaile. Casual interaction, as participants make their way to stopping points of interest, can be in English, Ulster Scots, Gaeilge and basic Scottish Gàidhlig. Contact gaelarasmhicardghail@gmail.com for further information.
