Write a commentMembers of the Newry and Portadown IWAI branch are looking forward to the reopening of Victoria Lock following repairs to the lock gates over the summer. The lock repairs are scheduled for completion in November.
The group were invited last month for a close up look at the historic Ship Canal lock gates when they were craned out for maintenance.
The lead engineer on site explained the project and they had a chance to look inside the gates themselves.
Having built their own gates they were very familiar with the components and techniques involved albeit on a much more grand scale.
Eamon McManus from the Council also gave them an update on the dredging work at the lock and the plans the council has for trying to keep the approaches silt free in the future. Work is due to be completed in November in time for the influx of local yachts who use the Albert Basin as a safe and convenient winter berth.
