Write a commentNewry 2020 and the Albert Basin Park Project are joining with 38 Degrees and The Field Trust and inviting the public to join them at the Albert Basin in Newry this Saturday 8 July from 12pm to 4pm to have a “Picnic In The Park” and demonstrate the need for a shared large public space in Newry.
Newry 2020 are campaigning to have a 15 Acre city Park at the Albert Basin, a site that has stood derelict in the centre of our city for over 30 years. Although the site was given to the people of Newry in 1986, and the old council promised at that point to develop it into a "recreation and amenity" centre, it has been left undeveloped, and as a result Newry remains the only city in Ireland without a proper city park.
Brian Cleland, Chairman of Newry 2020 commented "This is the first year the Picnic in the Park will be happening in Newry. The community has made it clear that it wants a 15 acre park on the Albert Basin, and we will be using this event to highlight the unique potential of this site. Its a great chance for people to come together and have some fun, and at the same time support an exciting vision for our city's future, and we are hoping for a fantastic turnout on the day."
Bring a picnic, bring friends and family, and bring the message home to those in power that Newry needs this park.
