Walkers on the 2023 Camino trek for Southern Area Hospice take a break during their 113km walk across northwest Spain.

If you always fancied trekking the Camino but didn't fancy doing it yourself why not join up with the Southern Area Hospice for their September 2024 Camino de Santiago trek.  – The 113km challenge is across one of the most scenic routes in the world.

Walkers will trek across stunningly beautiful landscapes as they make their way along the Camino Frances – the most famous of the nine Camino de Santiago routes.

The flagship Hospice fundraiser takes place from 2-9 September, 2024.  Louise Lynch from Armagh who took on the Camino trek for SAH in July 2023. described it as a ‘once in a lifetime experience’. “The Camino trip with the Southern Area Hospice was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Louise.

“I always wanted to do the Camino and having the additional drive to fundraise for the Hospice gave the trip an extra element and it pushed me on every step each day.

“Not only did I gain perspective and positivity from completing the challenge on a personal level, but I was constantly uplifted by the amazing group I travelled with.”

Louise added: “It was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I will cherish forever.”

Guided by a professional English-speaking guide, walkers will set out on their 113km trek from the northwestern Spanish town of Sarria.

Each day they will make their way through traditional Spanish villages and towns, finishing in the breathtaking city of Santiago de Compostela, home to the stunning Cathedral of Santiago, also known as St James’ Cathedral.

The package includes direct return flights, transfers, accommodation and five breakfasts and evening meals.

Money raised through the Camino will help SAH to continue providing invaluable specialist palliative care and support to patients and their families living in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area.

With a fundraising target of over £3.6m, Southern Area Hospice Services rely heavily on the local community to help reach their annual target and to provide care and support to people at a time when they need it most.

Brian Hyland, Fundraising Officer, said the Camino is a fantastic way to enjoy a remarkable new experience while raising vital funds for Southern Area Hospice.

“The Camino is an excellent opportunity for people to experience something different and support their local Hospice while doing so,” said Brian.

“People make friends for life on these trips and we have a lot of returning participants who love taking part.

“Each participant will be fully supported with their fundraising and we also organise regular participant meetings to help everyone get to know each other and prepare for the trip beforehand.”

Brian added: “I would encourage anyone who is interested and have the Camino to contact myself today for an information pack. By taking part in our Camino, or any of our fundraising events, you are making a real difference.”
