June Meeting for first Albert Basin Park Task and Finish Group

The Task and Finish Group set up to produce a 15 acre park at the Albert Basin in Newry will have it's first meeting 6 June at the council offices Monaghan Row, Newry. It marks a very exciting time for all who have campaigned for a signature park for Newry.

The make up of the group was ratified at last weeks full council meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, following a decision made at April's Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee meeting. 

The group set up by the council will consist of the Newry DEA Councillors, three members of Newry 2020, one Newry Chamber of Commerce, one Drumalane Community Association and one Unionist representative.

Meetings won't be open to the public and the Task and Finish Group will report to the Strategic Projects Working Group and then Strategy Policy and Resources Committee.

A Council Motion confirming their commitment to a full, 15-acre community park project on the Albert Basin site in Newry was carried at last December's Newry, Mourne and Down District Council meeting.

It followed years of campaigning by voluntary group Newry 2020 and others. The motion called for The Task and Finish group to be set up within three months but that has slipped to six months. The group will establish plans to move the project forward and investigate funding options.
