The announcement by the Department for Infrastructure earlier this week that consultants have been commissioned to progress the Newry Inner City Greenway Active Travel scheme, has been welcomed by Newry City Councillor Geraldine Kearns.
Cllr Kearns said the news is very positive for Newry and that she is excited to see the Inner City Greenway moving closer to delivery. "This project will help transform how people travel around our city, making it safer and more attractive to walk, wheel and cycle," Cllr Kearns said.
A key part of the scheme is the link between the Canal Towpath and the Carlingford Lough Greenway, creating a seamless, high-quality active travel route for residents and visitors alike.
Cllr Kearns said the Greenway will bring real benefits for local families and businesses, improving air quality, increasing footfall in the city centre and supporting healthier, more active lifestyles.
She said the progress, together with the recent £1 million investment in active travel schemes, shows Minister Liz Kimmins' commitment to investing in cleaner, greener transport and delivering for communities in Newry.
