Write a commentA £6 million investment to upgrade the water storage and supply network for customers in Newry city and surrounding areas has been announced by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy with laying of pipelines scheduled to get underway towards the end of this month.
This new programme of work forms Phase Three of the Ballydougan to Newry Trunk Main Scheme, which builds on the £1million already invested as part of this programme of works.
As part of the Phase Three programme, NI Water has recently started extensive upgrade work at Crieve Service Reservoir (SR), located off Fort Hill Road. The existing 0.4 mega litre tank is being replaced by a new 4.2 mega litre reservoir. This significant upgrade will improve storage and security of the water supply for customers in the east of Newry.
Minister Danny Kennedy said: “The Ballydougan to Newry Trunk Main Scheme represents a multi-million pound investment by NI Water to significantly improve the security of supply and quality of water for our customers in Newry and the surrounding area.
“This major investment is good news for customers in the area, as it will improve the security of the water supply infrastructure. It will also provide a welcome boost to the construction sector, with the contract for the work being undertaken by Maghera-based BSG Civil Engineering.”
Also included in the £6million package of improvements is the refurbishment and extension to Carnbane Water Pumping Station (WPS), located within Carnbane Industrial Estate and Cullyhanna WPS which is situated 4kilometres south of Newtownhamilton.
The project also involves the upgrade of chlorination and control equipment at a number of sites including Camlough Water Treatment Works (WTW), Newry West SR, located to the east of Newry off the Camlough Road and Camly Service Reservoir, located 2kilometres south of Newtownhamilton.
Finally, two new trunk mains are to be provided as part of the upgrade package to facilitate the transfer of water. The Camlough to Newry West Trunk Main is a major 3.5kilometre pipeline going from Carnbane WPS to Camlough WTW and Newry West SR. The Crieve Trunk Main is a 3km pipeline which extends from Annsville to Crieve Service Reservoir.
Martin Gillen NI Water Project Manager added: “We at NI Water are pleased to announce this important project for the security of the water supply, and will work with the public to ensure that this work is carried out with minimum disruption.
“We anticipate that pipelaying will get underway towards the end of March 2015, but we will brief elected representatives and key stakeholders affected in the coming weeks. Further updates will be available and signage will be in place as the scheme progresses.”
