MLA Liz Kimmins has welcomed cross border collaboration between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána in efforts to stamp out dangerous driving at the border on the Old Dublin Road at Carrickcarnan. The Newry and Armagh MLA and current Minister for Infrastructure said every effort must be made to deter large gatherings of cars, which she said are causing misery for the local community.

Her comments followed a recent meeting between Kimmins, her colleagues Dáire Hughes MP and Ruairí O'Murchu TD, and Councillors Cathal King and Antoin Watters, with representatives from both the PSNI and An Garda Síochána.

Kimmins said large crowds of so-called "boy racers" have been meeting at the spot for over 10 years, blocking the road, putting other road users at risk, impacting local businesses and causing annoyance and disturbance for local residents. She described the behaviour as totally unacceptable and said it had tormented the people of Killean and Edentubber for far too long.

"For many years Sinn Féin has been working with the local community, businesses, the PSNI and An Garda Síochána to put an end to this reckless behaviour which has tormented the people of Killean and Edentubber for far too long," she said.

"It is extremely welcome to see the partnership working between the two police services north and south, which we want to see continued and enhanced."

Kimmins said other physical measures which could improve road safety on the Old Dublin Road are also being explored, with roads officials from Louth County Council and the Department for Infrastructure considering options which may be beneficial.
