Local political representatives have stepped up in numbers to praise council works at local Play Parks. Mulaghbawn, Whitecross and Martins Lane in Newry all either have, or will have new facilities.
MLA Aoife Finnegan and Slieve Gullion Councillor Áine Quinn have welcomed the completion of the new play park in Mullaghbawn, hailing it as a “fantastic investment in local families and children.”
Councillor Quinn is delighted to see the Play Park officially completed. "This has been a labour of love since the beginning of my time as a councillor, and it’s incredible to see it brought to life."
Cllr Quinn continued "I have worked closely with local families, community groups, and council officials to help move this project forward, and the delivery of this brilliant facility is a real testament to what we can achieve together.
"The play park will provide a safe, inclusive, and exciting space for children to enjoy for years to come — right in the heart of our community.”
Newry Armagh MLA Aoife Finnegan added: “This is a fantastic investment in our local community and a brilliant example of what can be achieved at a community level with targeted funding and determination.
"I want to commend the work of local residents and pay tribute to my party colleague Áine Quinn for her commitment and leadership in helping deliver this much-needed community resource."
Welcoming the commencement of play park refurbishment works at Whitecross, following over a year of sustained engagement, meetings, and site visits involving community representatives and council officials Cllr Oonagh Magennis said: "This is a project that means so much to families across the area, and it’s fantastic to see it now moving forward."
Cllr Magennis praised those who helped bring the project to this point: "I want to commend our local volunteers, community members, and agency officials who have worked tirelessly to help get this over the line.
"We have kept the pressure on throughout the process to ensure this much-needed upgrade was prioritised and delivered."
"The park will remain closed for a short period to facilitate the works.
Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers also welcomed the completed repairs to Martin Lane Play Park, describing it as a long-overdue step in addressing safety concerns raised by both residents and the council.
“I’m pleased that the much-needed repairs to Martin Lane Play Park have now been completed, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable space for local children and families,” said Councillor Mathers.
“While this is positive news, it’s essential that the council improves communication with residents on safety concerns and project timelines going forward. Timely and transparent engagement helps build trust and ensures the community stays informed.
Cllr Mathers also called on local families and residents to play their part in safeguarding the facility.
“I encourage parents to ensure children respect the park and use it responsibly. I also urge residents to remain vigilant and report antisocial or criminal behaviour so the park remains a welcoming space for all.”
