Storm Isha raged through the district last evening with extremely strong winds bringing down many trees in the Newry area. One motorist was extremely fortunate to escape from his car when a large tree fell on his car on the Turnavall Road near Shinn just outside Newry just after 9pm last night. The car was completely trapped between the thick limbs of the tree.

Locals managed to rescue the driver by prising open the door and the driver was able to get out of their car although they were extremely shaken by their ordeal. The road will remain closed for some time.
Elswhere thankfully damage wasn't as catastrophic with a shop shutter on Merchants Quay and on Monaghan Street destroyed and a sign on the former Carlin Records store damaged. Fallen debris from Newry City centre buildings was also causing concern at one stage.

A tree also fell on the Carlingford Lough Greenway just in front of Drumalane.
Some homes in the district are still without electricity following an extremely challenging night for NIE. Staff are working their way through repairs and ask customers to report any outages.
