Write a commentNewry, Mourne and Down councillor Barra Ó Muirí has urged everyone in South Armagh to embrace Seachtain na Gaeilge this year, with a wide range of events open to the public.
Running each year from March 1 to March 17, Seachtain na Gaeilge aims to promote the Irish language by making it increasingly more visible.
The Irish Language Strategy Working Group of the Council have launched their annual Gaeltacht Scholarship scheme. The scheme opens on March 19, and is open to any child attending the Gaeltacht this year. The scheme reimburses 50% of the cost of the course upon completion of the said course.
Cllr Ó Muiri commented "In the first 2 years of this wonderful scheme, we were oversubscribed. This year, we have allocated a further £10,000 to the scheme, meaning that £45,000 worth of Gaeltacht scholarships will be given out by Council this year. A further £5000 is available for adult courses also."
On Saturday 14 March, local Irish language group Gaelphobal Árd Mhacha Theas will host their annual Lá Mór na Gaeilge with Classes from 10.30-12.30, the recently-successful play ‘Annie an Iúir’ by Gaelscoil Phádraig Naofa will be on the stage from 1pm to 1.45, and dráma, dance, singing and music workshops will take place from 2 to 4pm. Hosted this year by Gaelscoil Phádraig Naofa in Crossmaglen, Lá Mór na Gaeilge promises to be a fantastic day. All welcome.
As well as this, Armagh GAA have recently launched their scholarship scheme and the Slieve Gullion Councillor has urged anyone attending Gaeltacht courses this year to make contact with their club secretary for more details.
