A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Newry following reports of a hijacking incident in The Demense area yesterday afternoon, 2 October which saw a woman forcibly removed from her car before the suspect drove off at high speed from police.
Police received a report shortly after midday yesterday of an altercation in the driveway of a house in The Demense, involving a man and woman. It was reported that the man had forcibly removed the woman from her car, a white Nissan Qashqai, then drove off from the scene.
While making their way to The Demense, responding officers encountered the stolen vehicle at Dorans Hill. The Qashqai failed to stop for police and instead made off at high speed in the direction of Chancellors Road.
Later that afternoon, at around 3pm, officers located the car at Damolly Retail Park and arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of a number of offences including hijacking, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, driving when unfit through drink or drugs, no driving licence, using a motor vehicle without insurance and failing to stop for police. He is currently in police custody.
