A man has been arrested in Birmingham in relation to a 26 March 1992 mortar attack at Merchants Quay in Newry.
Thirty four year old Constable Colleen McMurray from Sixmilecross died a few hours after the incident as a result of her injuries.
A PSNI spokesperson said "Detectives from Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Legacy Investigation Branch, investigating the murder of Constable Colleen McMurray and the attempted murder of her colleague in a mortar attack in Newry in 1992, have today made an arrest.
"The 59 year old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act at Birmingham Airport, with the assistance of Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands, and will be transported to Northern Ireland for questioning in the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station."
An IRA mortar bomb struck the unmarked car Constable McMurray was a passenger in, as it went along Merchants Quay in Newry. The driver sustained life changing injuries.
