A 21 year old man appeared before Newry Magistrates Court yesterday Friday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with a serious assault in Newry in the early hours of New Years Day.
He has been remanded in custody.
The man was arrested Thursday evening in connection with the assault that took place in the vicinity of Canal Street.
At around 2.30am it was reported that an altercation took place between a number of men in the area. As a result a 28 year old man sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.
Detective Constable Lisa McAteer is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information to contact CID at Ardmore Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
