Newry Maritime Association has welcomed the announcement of the latest Public Realm work on Newry Canal which is planned to start in April or May.
A spokesperson said "The next phase of the Public Realm Works is something to be welcomed by us all.The inward investment of £2.4 million represents the first investment in the Canal and its environs through the city in living memory."
"Today, realistically the urban section of our waterway lends itself to recreational activities and it also offers commercial opportunities to our business community. It will be a tremendous asset to our citizens and visitors to have the banks of the canal opened up as usable public space allowing everyone to enjoy a key element of our built heritage."
The work will be centred on the Buttercrane Quay area between Dublin Bridge and Sugar Island Bridge.
