Newry Market has just signed up to a new initiative launched by The National Market Traders’ Federation (NMTF) to encourage people in the local area to set up new businesses and run them from market stalls.
Barbara Swinbourne has fought off stiff competition to get to the second stage of a national competition run by NMTF . “First Pitch” is a competition that gives budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to become market traders for one year and, if chosen as the overall winner, win a cash prize of £2,000.00 to continue growing their business. Barbara will do 5 days of test trading at Newry Market run by Newry & Mourne District Council.
Catherine Sweeney, at Newry and Mourne District Council said, “First Pitch is a great opportunity for people who have been thinking about starting a small business to take the first successful steps toward it. We are very happy to be involved with this initiative, which will hopefully give budding entrepreneurs a good incentive to get into business through our markets.” She added “We have information about First Pitch and details about Newry Market on the Newry and Mourne Council’s website, along with details about First Pitch.”
NMTF Chief Executive, Joe Harrison, said: “We are thrilled an overwhelmed at the interest from the public and also the support we have gained from market operators. It is clear that markets are a serious option for individuals looking to start their own businesses and we are seriously looking forward to watching our successful entrants develop while being mentored by experienced market professionals over the next 12 months. We fully expect NMTF First, our guide to help new traders to navigate their way through their first 12 months in business, to come into its own during this competition.”
Minister of State for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk is in support of the competition said, "The Government is committed to encouraging a more dynamic private sector, and we can’t just count on big business and a few tried-and-tested industries. We are backing new start-ups and those setting up in business for the first time.
"Market traders are a great example of people striking out on their own and the 'First Pitch' competition will encourage more aspiring entrepreneurs to set up in business."
