A Mass of Thanksgiving is being held in Newry Cathedral next week to celebrate the 200th anniversary of St Colman's College in Newry. When the school originally opened on 12 May 1823 it was located at William Street in the town and had just 40 pupils on its register. Today the college is located at Violet Hill and has nearly 900 pupils.
When it originally opened it was known as The Diocesan Seminary of “School of Dromore” Initially the school would have been to train candidates for the priesthood as well as the education of the sons of the Catholic middle-class and relatively wealthy landowners.
The school has had much sporting success over the years, especially in Gaelic games. Most recently their team won the D'Alton Cup. They also have strong musical and Irish language departments.
Archbishop Eamon Martin will celebrate the Mass in the Cathedral this Wednesday 10th May at 10.30am and will visit the college afterwards.
