Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers has condemned an attack on the Fire Brigade in Carnagat this week while crews were responding to an emergency call.
Cllr Mathers said the attack was dangerous and had caused fear in the local community. He linked it to a pattern of recent attacks on public services in the area. "There is absolutely no excuse for targeting emergency services. This was a disgraceful and dangerous attack that put lives at risk and caused fear in our community."
Cllr Mathers also referenced a series of recent attacks on Translink services, including one that occurred last Sunday night, describing the trend as unacceptable.
"Our firefighters serve with courage and professionalism and deserve to do their job safely," he said. "This follows a series of attacks on Translink services in recent months, with one attack also taking place on Sunday night. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
Cllr Mathers confirmed that meetings are planned for next week with community groups, police and relevant agencies to discuss how to prevent further incidents.
Sinn Féin, he said, would work with all partners to ensure those responsible are held to account and that emergency services are protected.
