Local Councillor Aidan Mathers has called for urgent action to deal with the issue of dog fouling across the district.
The Newry City councillor spoke after a number of matches at Jennings field were delayed due to the level of dog waste on the pitch.
Councillor Mathers said “Dog fouling is a major issue across the district, with local families and businesses raising concerns about this issue on an almost daily basis.
“In particular, we have seen a number of local football games, due to be played on Jennings field in the Meadow, delayed due to the amount of dog fouling left on the pitch making it dangerous for the players.
“At the first meeting of the new council cleansing Taskforce, Sinn Fein stressed that tackling the scourge of dog fouling, particularly in Newry City, must be a priority.
“The council must ensure that bins are emptied regularly, so that people can safely dispose of dog fouling, while ensuring that they have a plan to take a decisive and proactive approach to those who refuse to pick up this waste.
“I will also be calling on the council to have specific dog fouling bins installed at the pitch for the safe disposal of dog fouling.
“These playing fields are a fantastic space for local athletes, with great potential, so it is imperative that the council ensures they are kept clean and safe for all who use them.
