Former All Ireland Medal winner for Armagh and current Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has hailed the historic win by Armagh’s footballers at the weekend, paying tribute to the tenacity and resilience of the players and management.
Mr. McNulty said: “I think we are all just beside ourselves bursting with pride and excitement. To achieve All-Ireland success is a privilege that comes only to a few, and I cannot think of a group of lads more deserving than this Armagh team.
“Armagh have been knocked back at the latter stages of the Championship for a number of years, and despite those setbacks, the disappointments, and the naysayers, they never lost faith and never gave up. Yesterday was a historic win, and massive credit is owed to everyone who made it happen.
“From the players and the management and backroom team who drove the effort forward with laser focused commitment, to the County Board, the players’ families, local clubs and fans who provided unwavering support and backing through thick and thin, this is a win that will be cherished by every Armagh Gael for years to come.
“It was incredible to watch my former Armagh teammate and current GAA President Jarlath Burns beaming with pride as he handed Sam Maguire over to a victorious Armagh team, and it was a moment made all the more special in seeing the pride of a father embracing his All-Ireland winning son.
“These men are outstanding ambassadors for their county and superb role models for the next generation of Armagh Gaels. The grace that they held themselves with in victory is a real testament to the character of the team that Kieran McGeeney has built.
“This has been a long time coming, and now it’s Armagh’s time to shine.”
