A local MLA has said that it is time to “dispense with all divisions” and make a “united and concerted push” for Daisy Hill Hospital. Justin McNulty is calling for everyone to help safeguard Daisy Hill.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said: “it is vital that we all take a united stand in opposing the Southern Trust’s proposals to take a wrecking ball to Daisy Hill Hospital. I’ve been deeply inspired by the passion of local people in stepping up to the plate by protesting, picketing, organising, and advocating for our right to equal access to health services.
“This week alone, we have applied massive pressure through a combination of high-level negotiations with the Department of Health and direct action from citizens through pickets and protests at Department of Health Headquarters.
“As a community, we need to keep the pressure on, and as an elected representative, I am calling for Sinn Féin to make a commitment that they will choose the Health Ministry in a new Executive. SF have their hands on the levers of power, and nominating a Health Minister designate would send a very clear message to the health authorities that Daisy Hill will be protected.
“The Trust Board will be meeting next week, and I have requested speaking rights at that meeting so that I can put across my vociferous opposition to their proposals directly to them. In addition, we will be having a public demonstration on Sunday 25th June at 2pm on Hill Street – not only am I appealing for everyone to turn out for that rally, but I would strongly encourage you to bring friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues along too.
“Everyone has their part to play in defending Daisy Hill. It’s extremely important that we all put our shoulder to the wheel over the weeks and months ahead. So whether it’s taking to the streets on Sunday 25th June, or laying the gauntlet down in the corridors of power right now – we all need to row in the same direction, with the same determination and the same unity of purpose.
“Nothing could more important than safeguarding the future of Daisy Hill – our lives depend on it.”
