MLA Justin McNulty is once again calling for an end of the geo-blocking of RTÉ programming in the North where many tv and mobile app viewers in the north can't access RTÉ’s coverage of Irish sporting events due to rights restrictions. The Newry and Armagh public representative believes one solution would be for the north to have a unique IP address. An IP address is a unique number that identifies a device connected to the internet.
Mr. McNulty said: “The continued unavailability of RTÉ programming, including the broadcast of GAA and other sporting fixtures is a source of deep frustration for so many people.
“Geo-blocking feels like a snub for us Northerners, plain and simple, and I have been campaigning to have this issue addressed alongside my colleagues in the SDLP.
“What we need to see is action from the Executive to establish an IP address specific to the North, so that licensing agreements do not interfere with the ability of Northern viewers to access the full suite of RTÉ programming and content.
“I have requested a meeting with the RTÉ Director General, and I have written to the Economy Minister urging her to get a unique IP address established in the North to end the practise of geo-blocking.
“There have been enough words of complaint over this issue. What we need to see now is action.”
