Opportunities for cross-border partnership and cooperation were on the agenda when Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty met with the Taoiseach’s Shared Island Unit in Dublin on Friday.
Speaking after the meeting, Justin McNulty said: “With an additional €1billion in funding for this Dáil term, the Shared Island Unit will make a transformative impact across the island of Ireland. I took the opportunity to discuss my priorities with them, including on infrastructure and transport, tourism, sport, the environment, and cross-border health care."
The Shared Island Initiative is run by the Department of the Taoiseach and involves building a shared island, promoting dialogue and engaging in research. Shared Island funding was granted for the building of the Narrow Water Bridge, just one of the large scale projects supported locally.
Mr McNulty added: “There are huge opportunities to be found in cooperation and working together on a cross-border basis. The SDLP has secured huge commitments through the Shared Island initiative, and we will continue to work collaboratively with the Southern Government to maximise the impact of North-South partnership.
“Pragmatic partnership that improves people’s lives will lay the foundations for the kind of new Ireland that we in the SDLP want to see. Lip service on a new Ireland isn’t enough, we need to see practical action and strategic direction delivered through vehicles like the Shared Island Unit.”
