Local MLA Justin McNulty has said he is encouraged by assurances provided to him by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt in relation to Daisy Hill Hospital’s maternity services.
Mr. McNulty submitted questions to the Health Minister to request a breakdown of the action taken by both the Department of Health and the Southern Trust to reinforce maternity services at Daisy Hill.
The Newry & Armagh rep said:“I find it encouraging that the Health Minister is taking steps to reinforce maternity services at Daisy Hill Hospital.
“The Minister has said that he is working proactively with the Southern Trust, and indeed other Trusts, to build support for our services. In addition, I draw comfort from the oversight that the Department is providing of the Southern Trust’s management of the current pressures on maternity, including efforts to recruit the specialists necessary to reinforce services.
“Far too often, people in Newry feel like their concerns in relation to Daisy Hill were falling on deaf ears. I give credit to the Health Minister for listening to us, and more importantly, acting to address our concerns.
“My commitment to local people is that I will continue to closely monitor the situation at Daisy Hill in relation to maternity services, and I will hold the Trust, and the Department of Health, to their word on the commitments they have made to secure our services.”
