MLA Justin McNulty has spoke of the need for long term investment following incidents in Derrybeg in Newry where raw sewage overflowed on to the footpath and road, prompting concern among residents. NI Water say they have addressed the issue and that the block was caused by "inappropriate items" being flushed down toilets.
McNulty claimed some residents believe the issue is linked to the wastewater system's ability to cope with new builds being added to the network, and say it is an ongoing, persistent problem. He said residents report that sludge clearance contractors are regularly on the ground in the area, either cleaning up raw sewage that has overflowed on to the public roadway and footpaths, or rodding pipes.
"The raw sewage in the streets of Derrybeg was a disturbing sight and a massive, disgusting frustration for all who live in and travel through the area," Justin McNulty MLA said. "I was out speaking to residents, who have complained of the ghastly smell and some even being trapped in their own homes by raw sewage. The firm message from the residents is that this major health and safety issue should not be happening in this day and age."
McNulty continued: "This sewage block is not an isolated issue. The Minister and her Department for Infrastructure need to invest in long term solutions to prevent blockages and leaks in the sewage network that is quite obviously unable to accommodate the flow at this location. I have written to the Minister for Infrastructure seeking answers on this reoccurring issue and will be firmly holding her and her Department to task on this issue at Infrastructure Committee to ensure they bring forward plans for resolution."
