Justin McNulty MLA with officials from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Rivers Division

MLA Justin McNulty has met with Department for Infrastructure Rivers Division officials to discuss concerns about the condition of the Clanrye River, flood alleviation and the need for improvements throughout the city.

The Newry and Armagh representative raised the issue of flooding that devastated local homes and businesses just two years ago, saying the Clanrye River is a vital part of the city's identity and history. He was informed that Phase 2 of the Newry Flood Alleviation Scheme is currently in pre-construction design and planning phases.

McNulty said every effort must be made by the Department of Infrastructure to fast-track the delivery of the scheme, especially around the Town Hall and new Theatre and Conference Centre Project. "Whilst DfI Rivers Staff are working diligently with limited resources to maintain the continuous free flow of water, permanent flood defences must be completed and must be completed fast," he said.

The MLA also stressed the importance of coordinated action amongst the Department for Infrastructure, Council and Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in consultation with local businesses and environmental groups to address ongoing silt build-up, dumping and visual degradation of the riverbanks along the Clanrye River Corridor.

McNulty said he was relieved that DFI Rivers have undertaken a recent recruitment drive and recently performed an emergency flood incident training exercise. "I am confident that committed DfI Rivers Staff are doing everything they can to be prepared for future flood events," he said.
