Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty met with the Irish Government’s Shared Island Unit last week, where he raised the need for stronger cross-border cooperation and investment in key infrastructure across Newry and Armagh.
Speaking after meeting with representatives of the Irish Government, Mr. McNulty said “I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with the Shared Island Unit to explore the potential for cross-border cooperation on a number of projects, including enhancing health, sports, and tourism infrastructure. Newry and Armagh is a border constituency and I see enormous opportunities in deepening cross-border cooperation and working together.
“During the course of my discussions with the Shared Island Unit, I put forward the case that Daisy Hill Hospital should have cross-border support in becoming a strategic hub hospital serving its natural catchment area on both sides of the border.
“Harnessing the tourism potential of our region was another focus of the discussion. Along with my SDLP colleagues, I have been lobbying for Armagh and Down to be included in the Ireland’s Ancient East tourism brand, and for a joint North-South effort to promote our region to the world."
Mr McNulty concluded “It’s natural to focus on the challenges we face as a society, but I see clear opportunities to transform towns and cities across our district through meaningful and determined cooperation on a cross-border basis. I will be working closely with my SDLP Council colleagues to progress the issues and initiatives discussed with the Shared Island Unit.”
