A local MLA has written again to Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd in connection with a controversial flood protection scheme at Greenbank Industrial Estate which could see the destruction of over 20 mature Oak trees.
Justin McNulty has called for a balanced approach in relation to the scheme, after local environmental advocates again raised concerns around the destruction of a significant number of established mature Irish Oak trees.
The Newry and Armagh Assembly Member was speaking after a site visit with DfI officials and local environmental advocates.

The MLA commented “I fully appreciate the need for enhanced flood defences along Greenbank, especially given the history of flooding in the area.
“A significant portion of the flood wall has already been constructed without any detrimental environmental impact, but completion of the plans in their current form would see the destruction of almost two dozen mature Irish Oaks, some of which have been there for centuries.
“At a time when government, business, and households are pulling together to try and mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis, I don’t think that it’s appropriate for any government department to engage in the removal of trees or forestry without exhausting alternative options.
“For that reason, I have once again written to the Infrastructure Minister and have requested that he and his department find a way to complete construction at Greenbank, without causing damage and destruction to our local environment.
“I will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders and agencies in pursuit of a sensible solution to this issue.”
