Justin McNulty has called for annual cancer screening to be made available to Firefighters

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has said that annual cancer screenings for firefighters is long overdue and has called on the Health Minister to introduce these screenings as a matter of urgency.

Speaking after a debate in the Assembly today, the Newry & Armagh MLA commented “Firefighters are undoubtedly among the most selfless people in our society. They put their lives on the line for us every single day and risk a profoundly negative impact on their physical health protecting people. It is important that we do our part to protect their health and the health of their families, particularly given the dangers posed by the carcinogenic fire effluents they are exposed to during the course of their service.

“Additional annual cancer screenings will greatly assist in better assessing the health status of our firefighters and allow us to better serve them as they play their vital role in our society. I would call on the Health Minister to introduce these additional screenings as a matter of urgency.”
