The founders of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, Colin and Eithne Bell, are planning to step back from the day to day running of the Newry-based organisation and the news has prompted a tribute from Newry and Armagh MLA Liz Kimmins.
The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was established by Colin and Eithne following the death of their son Kevin in New York in 2013 with the combination of the difficulties in getting his remains home and the incredible fundraising by Newry people who wanted to help giving them the idea of the charity. Over more than 13 years KBRT helped repatriate over 2,500 people who passed away overseas, providing support to grieving families throughout Ireland.
MLA Kimmins said: "The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is an incredible organisation. They have helped thousands of families across Ireland with repatriating loved ones who have passed away overseas. They have helped bring over 2,500 people home to grieving loved ones, providing compassion and support in the darkest of times."
She paid particular tribute to the personal journey of the Bell family, adding: "Collie and Eithne turned their own indescribable tragedy, the loss of their son Kevin, into such a powerful resource for people here. Their compassionate and professional leadership has provided comfort and support for families in the most difficult of circumstances for over 13 years."
Speaking about Kevin personally, she said: "Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Kevin will know the larger than life character he was, and I am honoured to have been able to call Kevin a friend. Collie and Eithne have worked tirelessly to build a charity in his name, a charity now known the world over and supported by every section of Irish society. It is an immense and fitting tribute to Kevin, and one that the entire community in Newry are very proud of."
Cllr Kimmins confirmed that Colin and Eithne Bell will remain involved with the Trust going forward. "I'd like to wish Collie and Eithne all the very best for the future and thank them for their invaluable efforts. As they step back from the day-to-day running of the organisation I hope they get the opportunity to enjoy some well-earned time with family and friends. I'm delighted to hear that they will still be involved with the work of KBRT and that the legacy they have built in Kevin's memory will grow from strength to strength, and endure for years to come."
