Local MLA Justin McNulty has said that ongoing uncertainty in relation to Daisy Hill Hospital’s Stroke Unit is completely unacceptable following news that acute stroke care services at the hospital will continue to be dealt with at Craigavon Hospital until the end of March.
Mr. McNulty has written to the Chief Executive of the Trust to request an explanation as to why, what was supposed to be temporary redirect of patients from Daisy Hill to Craigavon has now been extended until the end of March.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said: “I am deeply disappointed that Daisy Hill has been left without a fully functional Stroke Unit. The Trust have told me that, “those who need specialist acute treatment will be transferred to Craigavon or the Royal Victoria hospitals and once stable will be transferred back to the stroke unit at Daisy Hill should ongoing care be required” – quite simply, that isn’t good enough.
“Once again, we are in a position where poor staff planning by the Trust has left Daisy Hill weakened unnecessarily. Service suspensions and withdrawals at Daisy Hill seem to be happening all too frequently, and the question people in this area will quite rightly be asking is: why?
“I have said it before that our area always seems to be the last to get and the first to lose. The Southern Trust need to buck up and ensure that people in Newry, South Armagh, and South Down, have the same access to health services as anyone, anywhere else.”
