Newry City councillor Geraldine Kearns has tabled a motion calling for parking incentives to be introduced across council run car parks in Newry this Christmas in a bid to support local traders and encourage shoppers into the city centre during the busy festive period.
Cllr Kearns has submitted the motion to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, urging officials to bring forward measures such as one hour free parking or three hours for £1 in council managed car parks. The proposal aims to ease the cost burden on families and workers whilst giving local businesses a much-needed boost as the Christmas shopping season gets underway.
Cllr Kearns said the move recognises the importance of revitalising town centres and addresses ongoing parking challenges in Newry. She said town and city centres sustain jobs, support small businesses and serve as vital community spaces, adding that convenient and affordable parking is key to local economic development.
The councillor explained that she and her party has been working alongside Newry traders, Newry BID and local residents to identify practical measures that support social and economic growth. She also welcomed a recent commitment from Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to look at options for easing on-street parking pressures in Newry and to make on-street parking free on public holidays, describing it as "a positive step".
Cllr Kearns said her party is taking a proactive approach across both Assembly and Council level with a range of initiatives aimed at reducing the stress and cost of parking in the city. "These measures would make a real difference to families, shoppers and local businesses at a time of year when every penny counts," she said.
The motion comes as retailers prepare for one of the busiest trading periods of the year, with Cllr Kearns saying the aim is to create a city centre that is "vibrant, accessible and welcoming for everyone" whilst encouraging people to shop local and support Newry traders throughout the festive season.
