Newry and Armagh MP Dáire Hughes has paid tribute to local woman Donna Sloan, who has died following a five year battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
Diagnosed in 2021 Donna bravely fought the illness and her family and friends organised many community initiatives under the 'Do it for Donna' umbrella to raise funds and awareness of MND.
Extending his condolences to the family and friends of Donna Mr Hughes described her as a tireless activist and deeply committed republican who gave so much of herself to her community.
"Donna always had a remarkable sense of justice and fairness. She stood up for people here and was a passionate, vocal and proud advocate for the people of Palestine. Donna was never afraid to have her voice heard," he said.
The MP said Ms Sloan continued to keenly follow local and international developments even as she battled her illness, surrounded and supported at all times by her loving and devoted family.
"Donna's dedication, warmth and unwavering commitment touched the lives of so many people. Her loss will be felt right across this area," he added.
Mr Hughes extended heartfelt condolences to Ms Sloan's husband Anthony, her parents Shiela and Tommy, her children Caoibhe, Ciara, Conor and Clíodhna, her grandchildren, sisters, brothers and entire extended family, as well as to her friends, neighbours and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her.
Donna’s remains will repose at her late residence, 9C Barr Road, Belleeks, Newry, BT35 7QD on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 January from 11am - 9pm.
People attending the wake are asked to park at the Mountain House, where shuttle buses will be provided to bring you to and from the wake house. Funeral will leave her late residence on Wednesday at 10am for 11am Requiem Mass in St Laurence Church, Omeath, Co. Louth. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
