Mr Hazzard has welcomed progress in addressing long standing road safety issues in the village.
The former Infrastructure Minister was joined by his South Down colleagues Sinead Ennis MLA & Cllr Oksana McMahon as they discussed the need to improve the flow of traffic in tandem with improving pedestrian safety in the village.
The South Down MP said: “I want to thank DfI Roads for their ongoing engagement with us in relation to improving road safety in Mayobridge. In recent years we have seen much needed improvements along the Newry - Downpatrick transport corridor; especially the B8 section of the route which includes road links between Mayobridge, Hilltown, Kilcoo and the A25 towards Castlewellan.
“A similar engagement with DfI Roads is now taking place in relation to a number of longstanding road safety issues in Mayobridge and this week we convened on site in the village to discuss a number of potential schemes that are now going to progress through design stages for further consultation very soon.
“These include a scheme to slow traffic approaching the village on the Newry Road; the upgrading and repositioning of the mini-roundabout at Chapel Hill; the realignment of the Bavan Road junction with additional footpath; and a pedestrian crossing.
Sinead Ennis MLA added: “Recent investment in road schemes at Ballydoo junction and the long overdue pedestrian crossing in Hilltown have been welcomed by the local community as road safety is a growing concern.
"I am delighted that DfI Roads are engaging positively once again on the need to invest similarly now in Mayobridge and I look forward to working with them to help see these schemes delivered in the time ahead.”
