Despite the inclement weather young and not so young gathered at the Cenotaph in Sugar Island yesterday for the annual Royal British Legion organised Remembrance Sunday commemoration. The event is to enable participants to pay their respects to the fallen. Led by the Hunter Moore Memorial Band the parade made its way along Trevor Hill just before 11 O'Clock yesterday morning.
Those assembled held a two minute silence at 11 O Clock which was then followed by The Last Post.
Wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by former and current servicemen and women, the PSNI, bandsmen, Sea Cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts, pupils from Windsor Hill PS, Newry High School and a St John's Ambulance representative. Slieve Gullion Councillor David Taylor and Newry Cty Councillor Doire Finn also laid wreaths.
Following the wreath laying Prayers were led by Rev Scott McDonald, St Patrick's and St Mary's Church of Ireland. King Charles' representative the Lord Lieutenant for County Down, Gawn Rowan Hamilton also spoke.
