A new exhibition, ‘John Mitchel: Challenging & Redressing A Legacy’, was launched on Tuesday 7 December at Newry and Mourne Museum.

The exhibition has been created by Footsteps NI and is part of the PEACE IV Shared History programme that has been looking at the legacy of John Mitchel.  It brings to life the writings, beliefs and character of this 19th century Irish Republican, who’s views about slavery and race are controversial to say the least.

This fascinating exhibit, which re-examines and challenges his legacy in the modern world, is funded by the European Union’s Peace IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Oonagh Magennis said, “This exhibition will provide an opportunity for the wider community to review the legacy of John Mitchel and we are very grateful to the funders for making this project possible.”

PEACE Partnership Chairperson, Councillor Terry Andrews added, “We are delighted that through the PEACE IV Shared History Programme we are able to explore the life of John Mitchel.  This exhibition aims to address some controversial topics and asks you to challenge your own understanding of him and what he stood for.”

The exhibition will be on display in the Museum reception area until Saturday 15 January 2022, before travelling to other venues. It is also available for use by interested venues, libraries and societies.  Those wishing to host the exhibition should contact the Museum at 0330 137 4992.

The Museum is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4.30pm and admission is free.

Match funding for this project has been provided by The Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department for Rural and Community Development in Ireland.
