Rathfriland WI are launching a new initiative aimed at supporting women in their local community. The 'Supporting Local Women' project has been made possible with a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.
President of Rathfriland WI, Margot Groves, shared her enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to receive the go-ahead for this project, which focuses on supporting women in Rathfriland and the surrounding areas. The initiative will offer a variety of cross-community events, encouraging local women of all ages to get involved in social and skill-building activities.”
The programme will kick off with a lively event – a Wild West Barn Dance, taking place at the Young Farmers' Hall on Friday, 18 October 2024. Margot continued, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together for a fun-filled evening. Families and friends are invited to dress up and dance to the tunes of the popular band Stonewall, while enjoying delicious Wild West-themed food.”
As the project unfolds, it will also include a series of six-week courses covering crafts, reading, cookery, and IT skills, as well as group walks. Additionally, coach trips will be arranged, allowing participants to visit places of interest across the province.
Branch Secretary Ada Elliott added, “Rathfriland WI has been part of the community for over 75 years, but like many voluntary organisations, we’ve faced challenges since the Covid-19 pandemic. We hope this project will help us reconnect with women from all walks of life and find new ways to integrate within the community.
“Our goal in applying for this funding was to showcase the talents of our members, reach out to women of all ages and backgrounds, and address issues like social isolation and the rising cost of living. We’re extremely grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund and are optimistic that this project will bring about fresh opportunities for social and educational activities in our community.”
