Road Safe NI have presented a batch of high-visability vests to the PSNI in Newry, Mourne and Down. Police will distribute them to pedestrians to help keep them safe on the roads as winter approaches.
The new initiative will see local Policing Team Officers across the District carrying these vests whilst on routine patrol and offering them out to pedestrians.
Inspector Paddy Heatley said: “We are delighted to be working with the devoted volunteers in Road Safe NI to identify vulnerable road users and offer them high-visibility clothing and road safety advice where necessary.
“As the hours of daylight get shorter I would urge all road users to consider their safety, in particular for pedestrians to be safe and be seen and for drivers to be mindful of walkers and cyclists on our roads.”
Tricia O’Neill from Road Safe NI said: “We all know someone who has been affected by the tragic consequences of road traffic collisions. It is not something that only happens to others and they can cause long lasting physical and emotional trauma.
“By drivers being aware of other road users and pedestrians making themselves easily seen we can all help reduce the risk of collisions.”
