Your New Council Area Needs A New Name – Can You Think of One?

Down, Newry, Mourne and Armagh - all names associated with this place but what do you think the new Council should be called?

Local Government is changing and in May 2011 your Council - Newry and Mourne District Council and Down District Council merge to become a new super Council serving the people of Down, Mourne, Newry City and South Armagh.

The new Council will shape how services will be delivered to your community and it is fitting that it should have a new name which reflects the distinctive nature of the people and the place.

Down District Council Chairman, Councillor William Dick was delighted to launch the competition along with the Deputy Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor Charlie Casey on Tuesday 29 September 2009.

Councillor Dick stated, “The new Council is an important step forward in providing a full range of services to families and children, and indeed everyone in both the Down and Newry and Mourne Council areas. Therefore, it is important that we involve all of our citizens in the major transformation of our local Council and I am delighted to jointly launch this schools competition inviting suggestions for the name of the new Council.”

Concurring with this statement Councillor Casey reflected his delight in jointly launching the schools competition. He said, “Identifying a suitable name has a major part to play in creating a sense of place and purpose for our new Council area which will come into being in May 2011”.

A new name and corporate identity will signpost to all residents and employees that the new Council marks a new beginning.

We would like to invite students to enter the competition to suggest a name for the new Council.

• We would like students to think about the place they come from.

• What sort of a name could represent all of the new Council area?

• Think about the people, the landscape, the history and the culture.

• Think about what the name would look like on signs and on paper.

The competition is open to any student enrolled at a school or college within the existing Council areas of Newry and Mourne and Down District. All suggestions will be given consideration in naming the new Council. Individual prizes of Ipod 8gb Touch will be presented to the authors of those suggestions favoured by the judges.

Entries with the suggested name for the new Council should be forwarded to your Council Offices at either

Down District Council, 24 Strangford Road, Downpatrick, BT30 6SR or Newry & Mourne District Council, Monaghan Row, Newry, BT35 8DJ.

Please ensure you include your name, address, telephone number, and the name and address of your school with your entry. DEADLINE for entries is 4.00 pm on Friday 20 November 2009.
