A  support group for carers has been set up in Newry with meetings twice a month at Ballybot House, Cornmarket.

When caring for someone with dementia carers are likely to need support at some point, and research would suggest that carers who get less support are more likely to feel stressed, isolated, overwhelmed and depressed.

Dementia and memory problems affect a significant amount of people aged 65 and over, with these numbers growing as we live longer due to better health outcomes generally, and better treatment options for the condition itself. There are approximately 19,000 people living with dementia in Northern Ireland.

Caring for someone with dementia can be lonely with many not thinking of themselves as a carer, particularly if the person with memory loss is a partner, parent or close friend.  But evidence indicates that both they and the person with dementia will need support to cope with the symptoms and changes in behaviour.

A focus group comprising of carers, community services and Trust statutory services identified that Carers would significantly benefit from a safe, informal meeting space to meet with other carers to benefit from emotional support as well as learn and receive advice on various issues/concerns they may be experiencing caring for their loved one both pre and post diagnosis of a dementia illness.

A support group for carers is now running for people to connect with each other, speak to professionals, ask questions and get advice on support services and how best to care for their loved one.

Support Group Times

The support group meets twice per month on the first Tuesday (7-9pm) and the third Tuesday (2-4pm) of each month in Ballybot House.  Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no need to register.

The Carers Support Group will  provide:

·        Signposting for carers struggling with specific issues.

·        A safe place for carers to meet and support each other
