New Signage and Road Markings for Meigh

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has held a multi agency meeting to discuss ongoing road safety issues in Meigh village and new signage is to be erected and an anti-skid surface applied.

Cllr Mulgrew has said that whilst the meeting was positive, more needs to be done to address the concerns of the local community.The local Councillor explained “There  has been a huge community campaign for better safety measures at the crossroads. Sinn Féin has been to the fore supporting residents in their fight for traffic calming measures to be introduced. Most recently my colleague Liz Kimmins MLA raised the matter  directly with Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Minister Nichola Mallon, but unfortunately her response was disappointing and confirmed that the stretch of road was not deemed dangerous enough to be included in any future works programme”.

Councillor Mulgrew continued “I this week facilitated a multi-agency meeting to discuss the ongoing and deeply concerning road safety issues in Meigh village. The meeting was attended by members of the PSNI, Transport NI, Council officials and community representatives.
During the meeting we discussed a number of issues including poor and inadequate signage, worn road markings, possible sightline obstructions, the environmental improvement scheme and PSNI response”.

The Newry City councillor added “As a result of the meeting new signage will be placed on both the Chapel Road and Railway Road which should give advance warning of the Crossroads. We also agreed that Electric poles are to be removed and wires placed underground and the postbox moved.

New anti-skid surface will be applied and yellow lines and red road markings used to highlight junction visibility”.

"Over the next few weeks a speed indicator sign will be place on the main road and PSNI have agreed to place the Speed Trailer in the vicinity”.

Concluding Cllr Mulgrew said “Whilst all of these measures are welcome we will continue to press the Minister and her department to address this issue. In the meantime I would urge all motorists to ensure they drive carefully, remain vigilant and  obey the speed limit at all times“.
