A new social space is opening in Newry in early January with the aim of providing a relaxed and comfortable environment for people with mental health challenges.
The Sanctuary Newry is being set up by a group of friends who connected through a support group and developed strong bonds by supporting and uplifting each other. Joe, Deirdre, Jackie, Jacqueline, and Peter have held regular meetups and the gatherings sparked an idea and a shared vision, that vision being to establish a social haven for individuals living with mental health challenges.
A Salvation Army initiative the Sanctuary aims to be a secure space where like-minded individuals can come for various reasons: whether it's to step out of the house, engage in friendly conversations over a cup of tea or coffee, or perhaps make new connections with both new and familiar faces. You can expect a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, board games, and discussions. However, there's absolutely no pressure; the goal is to foster a comfortable and sociable atmosphere.
Based at the Salvation Army premises at 14a Trevor Hill the event 10 January will run from 1 - 3pm. There is no referral needed to use the service, just turn up. The Sanctuary will be open every Wednesday thereafter from 10am to 2.30pm.
