A Planning Application has been submitted for retail units and flats at Sugar Island in Newry. Located on the corner of Sugar Island and Basin Walk where Preston Flowers and Friar Tucks Restaurant are currently, the applicatiion proposes to build 3 ground floor retail units and 20 self contained flats on the 1st to 4th floor levels above.
The proposal involves demolition of 1-7 Sugar Island and 1-3 Basin Walk to facilitate the comprehensive redevelopment.
The Merchant's Quay/ Sugar Island/ Canal Street areas have been neglected for years but in recent months building/ rennovation projects with accomodation to the fore are getting underway in at least 5 locations, with the potential to bring much needed renewed life into the city centre.
