Seven Youth Councillors have been elected to Newry and Mourne Youth Council at yesterdays annual election by the group.
The Newry & Mourne Youth Council are a group of young people who act as a voice to represent young people from the Newry & Mourne area. They develop social action programmes based on issues identified by young people that they feel is important to resolve in their area. The group are supported by the Education Authority Southern Region and based at the Youth Resource Centre, Carnbane in Newry.
They also run the Youth & Future Talent Awards (YAFTAs) an annual award ceremony to commemorate the work done by the ‘unsung heroes’ in our community, who maybe don’t receive as much recognition as they are due. These awards were created by the Newry & Mourne Youth Council as they believed there was not enough done to highlight the hard work and efforts of the young people in our areas who do so much for the community and the people in it.
These are the Youth Councillors who were elected for office bearer roles:
Chairperson: Conor McLoughlin
Vice Chairperson: Matthew Carvill
Secretaries: Amy Rice & Christopher Dunne
Treasurer: Ellen McManus
Public Relations Officers: Hannah Fitzpatrick & Rebecca Maguire
The council now look towards organising social action programmes around issues affecting young people, different charity events to help raise funds for local charities and also their flagship programme the YAFTAs which they hope to hold in early 2017.
