Council Chairperson, Cllr Roisin Mulgrew in conjunction with Newry Lions Club, has launched an appeal for members of the public to donate their unwanted, single use medical equipment to support hospitals in Syria and help save the lives of people affected in the conflict. The scheme is a pilot project, which will be in operation at all Household Recycling Centres in the district throughout April and May 2018.

Councillor Mulgrew said, “The Council is delighted to facilitate this excellent initiative, which was instigated by Newry Lions Club.  The scale of the humanitarian crisis in Syria is enormous and innocent people including children are being killed and injured every day. The people in Syria have a dire need for medical supplies and many people throughout the district have one off medical equipment from hospitals such as crutches, zimmer frames and wheelchairs, which cannot be returned due to health and safety issues.

Councillor Mulgrew continued, “The Council has set up collection points at all of its Household Recycling Centres and the public are asked to leave their unwanted one off medical equipment at their nearest Centre.  Newry Lions Club will then arrange for the collection of the equipment and for it to be distributed to hospitals in Syria.”
