The Respect Project in Newry is launching the first stage of its Get Home Safe initiative this week. The project has released a series of short videos aimed at helping young people make safer choices on nights out. The videos, developed with the project's Youth Peer Leaders, focus on simple messages, real situations and practical advice for before, during and after a night out.
Five videos are being released. The Plan Ahead video was released 6 July, followed by the Avoid Risks video 7 July, the Respect Yourself & Others video on 8 July, the Team Together video on 9 July, and the You Decide video today 10 July. The videos will be shared on the project's social media channels using the hashtag #remembertoPARTY #gethomesafe, and can also be viewed via the Get Home Safe website.
The website has been developed as part of the campaign and covers a number of topics including alcohol, drugs, mental health, sexual health, consent and personal safety, providing an easy to access resource so support can be found when needed. The messages in the video are simple and relatable, encouraging small actions that could play a big part in helping people get home safely from a night out, and project organisers are hoping they will be shared widely to help create a stronger community message about looking out for each other. For example if your friend can't get in to a night spot, stay with her and don't leave her alone, look out for your friends and help them get home safely if they have had too much to drink or the importance of charging your phone before you go out and having some money on you just in case.
The Respect Project is encouraging people to share the video posts on their own social media channels and to support the campaign as it goes live throughout the week. The project's Facebook, Instagram and TikTok channels can be found under the name Respect Project Newry.
