Newry City Councillor Roisin Mulgrew is to step down from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council following nine years as a public representative. In an announcement on Facebook she explained that she had informed Sinn Féin some time back that she wouldn't be allowing her name to go forward as a candidate for the May 2023 local government elections.
The former Slieve Gullion Councillor replaced Liz Kimmins in Newry City in February 2020 and was Council Chairperson for the 2017-2018 term. She was also co-chair of the Newry City Centre Regeneration Programme Board.
Making the announcement Cllr Mulgrew said "I have been in council for nine years and was always proud to work for and with my community." She added "I will forever be humbled by the work and achievements of all of those in the voluntary, community and charity sector. You are the very cornerstone of our society and simply do not know your worth, I applaud each and every one of you."
Councillor Mulgrew also spent nearly 5 years as Chairperson of Mourne, Gullion and Lecale Rural Development Partnership Local Action Group and was instrumental in securing funding for works at Derramore Wood which saw new infrastructure and facilities installed at the popular forest.
