The award recognised Jackie and the Newspaper for their contribution towards achieving equality and social acceptance for the local LGBT Community. The Democrat publishes a Fortnightly Column called "Gay Bits" on issues of interest to the local LGBT Community and has always prominently portrayed local issues, from coverage of Meetings to the Mr and Miss Gay Newry Competitions to the Monthly Passion Disco. A front page was even dedicated to Newry Rainbow Community's first ever float at Belfast Pride.
Columba stated "It should be taken as given that a local gay group such as the NRC should be able to receive as much coverage in the press as any other group or organisation. Sadly this is still more the exception than the rule for whatever reasons, but the Newry Democrat has excelled in giving us an equal bite of the cherry" "The Democrat has justifiably been voted the top Newspaper bar none on the Island of Ireland for giving the gay community a voice."
