With the culmination of research by Conradh na Gaeilge’s Heritage Development Officer, Anita Gallagher, Bunscoil an Iúir will be hosting an exhibition and talk on family life in Newry during the Second World War.
Throughout April and May Anita (who is funded by the National Lottery/Heritage Lottery Fund) has been working at research on several local history themes and delivering slide shows and lectures to various groups in the district. These have included Glenn and Barr Women’s Group, Cloughreagh Nursing Home, the 3 Ways Luncheon Group for older citizens, and the Headway Charity.
The talks, incorporating slide shows of old photographs, original documents and display materials, have covered Old Hill Street and Newry During the Second World War. This latter theme is to be brought to Bunscoil an Iúir on 29 May where parents and children will be treated - the children to a workshop on Family Life in Wartime Newry, while the parents will be able to view a display of materials including many artefacts from the period. This educational work also ties in with the Living History Workshops on the War presently being developed by Newry Museum at Bagenal’s Castle.
The next phase of the heritage project will be research for a celebration in Newry of the renowned Coláiste Bhríde Irish College in Omeath (founded almost a century ago), as well as making ready to equip the Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail due to open before Christmas. Our website will continue to keep you informed about planned activities so don’t forget to check out www.iurchinntra.ie in the coming weeks.
